_____
For Joy Chor, San Marin Performing Arts was a place to say yes, try new things, and learn from the people around her. That openness has stayed with her as she continues building a college experience filled with music across a wide range of styles.
After graduating from San Marin, Joy headed to Williams College, where she is majoring in Music and Asian American Studies. She remains deeply involved in performing arts and currently participates in six ensembles spanning multiple genres.
Career HighlightsJoy has quickly made music a major part of her college life. She performs at school-sponsored events, plays for student-written musicals, and has continued expanding the range of instruments and styles she works with.
One recent highlight has been learning to play marimba as part of a 12-person marimba ensemble.
REFLECTIONS & ADVICEJoy says one of the biggest things she carried with her from San Marin Performing Arts was the importance of being open to opportunities and learning from the people around you.
“Be open to all opportunities and learn from the people around you in all aspects of life.”
She especially credits Allison McIvor with showing her what that kind of growth can look like in practice.
“McIvor—juggling all the music, forcing me into playing bass, and seeing her adapt to all environments to help her musicians grow into the best versions of themselves. Big props!”
Her advice to current students is just as simple:
“Engage in any music, in big or little ways—don’t be afraid to try new things.”
