At San Marin, Manny LaCarrubba developed the musical foundation—and the confidence to perform—that continues to shape his life today.
After graduating from college, Manny began a career in engineering. Music remains his main creative pursuit: he performs locally with several bands and writes and records his own music.
Career HighlightsOne of Manny’s most meaningful San Marin experiences came during his senior year, when he joined the musical and sang onstage for the first time.
“Joining the musical my senior year and finally singing was a breakthrough moment for me. Singing is now my favorite musical outlet, and overcoming the fear of singing in front of others was the first step on that path—one that I am incredibly grateful for.”
Manny remembers Ms. McIvor and Mrs. Gates as especially supportive and encouraging throughout the experience.
“It was my favorite music experience of high school, and I wish I had joined sooner!”
Today, Manny continues to build on what he learned at San Marin through his own songwriting, recording, and performances with local bands. Music gives him an ongoing way to create, collaborate, and connect with other musicians.
“Ms. McIvor and Mrs. Gates gave me the ability to continue pursuing music and collaborating with other musicians.”
REFLECTIONS & ADVICEThe musical skills Manny developed at San Marin gave him a strong foundation that continues to support his creative pursuits.
“I can speak the language of music with other musicians in a way that makes playing together possible and productive. I would not have the musical opportunities I have now without that foundation.”
He credits Ms. McIvor and Mrs. Gates with giving him the skills and encouragement to make music a lasting part of his life.
“Ms. McIvor and Mrs. Gates gave me the ability to continue pursuing music and collaborating with other musicians.”
Manny’s advice for current San Marin students is to recognize that learning to sing or play an instrument is a gift they can carry throughout their lives.
“So many people I meet now wish they could sing or play an instrument. It is a skill that will stay with you forever. Music continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of my life.”
