San Marin Jazz Bands Perform at Columbia Big Band Jazz Festival
San Marin High School’s Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble traveled to Sonora, California, for two days of performances, workshops, and live jazz at the Columbia Big Band Jazz Festival.
On February 27–28, 2026, our talented jazz bands headed east to the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills and the historic town of Sonora, in the heart of California’s Gold Country. At the Columbia Big Band Jazz Festival, San Marin students showcased their skills alongside more than 400 middle and high school musicians.
Both the Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble had the opportunity to perform and participate in enriching workshops, receiving invaluable feedback from seasoned professionals. The festival was alive with the vibrant sounds of jazz and culminated in guest artist concerts featuring the Columbia Big Band.
The festival has a long history of bringing student musicians together for performance and musical growth. Columbia College records show that its jazz festival tradition dates back at least to the 1970s, with high school and junior high ensembles participating in performances and educational activities. The 2026 guest concerts took place at Sonora High School Auditorium and The Armory in downtown Sonora on February 27 and 28.

This collaboration allows San Marin Performing Arts to create meaningful opportunities that foster belonging, encourage artistic growth, and give students the chance to learn and perform beyond the classroom.
